John F. Kennedy Space Center is located near Cape Canaveral on Merritt Island in Florida and launches all of NASA's manned space flight missions. Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the East Coast space launch facility of the United State Department of Defense, is located adjacent and launches unmanned space missions. Patrick AFB home of the 45th Space Wing, is located only a few miles away. Originally called the Launch Operations Center, the facility was renamed the John F. Kennedy Space Center in 1963.
The site is 34 miles long. covering 219 square miles and employs about 17,000 people. KSC is a major destination stop on a trip to Florida and many enjoy the visitors center and public tours. Because much of KSC is off limits to development, the site is an important wildlife sanctuary, with only 9% of the land developed.
